Maelstrom type poster
Maelstrom is a display typeface designed by Kris Sowersby, owner of Klim Type Foundry. This is a double sided promotional poster for the typeface that would theoretically be sent out to designers to highlight this typeface. Kris often uses historical references in his typefaces and in this case he’s inspired by old Italian type. It’s reversed stress and almost unreadable so I wanted to emphasize this in the design. The goal of this poster is to show Maelstrom’s merit and one approach to using it. This poster uses the typeface more as an element of design rather than being concerned with readability. The key concept being “refined rebellion,” I wanted there to be moments of tension balanced by moments of calm. I hand cut the pieces, layered them, and scanned them to bring a more physical aspect to the poster to go along with the physicality of older forms of type making.
